Virtuoso Grinders FAQ

My timer knob keeps falling off?

The cross section of the knob is slightly thinner then it should be, allowing the knob to fall off.  We are in the process of fixing the mold so this will not happen in the future.  A quick fix you can do at home is to take a tiny piece of masking tape and put it on the cross section to make it slightly thicker.  You can also e-mail service@baratza.com and we will get you a knob that is molded with the thicker cross section if it is available.

What can I do if my grinder is clogged?
Sometimes when grinding fine and or using oily coffee the opening between the burrs and the ground chute gets clogged with coffee.  When the burrs are clogged the grinder will not grind beans and no coffee will drop into the grounds bin.  For instructions to clean out the coffee powder click here.

What can I do if my coffee beans are not feeding into the burrs?

We have found that sometimes large, oily, dark roasted beans do not feed smoothly into the burrs.  In September 2006 we added a variable speed circuit that enabled us to reduce the burr rotation speed from 630 to 410.  If your Virtuoso has a round electrical cord, it has the variable speed circuit.  It is set at the factory to rotate at about 450.  For instructions on how to change the burr rotation speed click here.

What can I do about a static problem with my Virtuoso?

In 2007 we started using a black anti-static coating on our grounds bins.  This coating solved much of the static problem with our grinders.  Both of these bins do a great job of reducing the static in our grinder.  If you are having problems with static, please e-mail us at service@baratza.com.

My burr is rusty:

The burrs come to us from Italy coated with protective oil to reduce oxidation or rust.  We clean them before we install them in the grinders.  Once the oil is removed the metal begins to oxidize a bit.  When you grind coffee with the burr (and throw the coffee away) the corrosive nature of the coffee will remove the little bit of rust.  Once you begin grinding coffee, you will find that the burr is coated with coffee oils which keeps the burrs from rusting.

What can I do if my Virtuoso does not grind fine enough?

The Baratza Virtuoso Grinders has an innovative burr calibration system that ensures that each grinder has the full range of grind; fine enough for any espresso machine and coarse enough for a Coffee Press. The grinders are calibrated at the factory.  You can fine tune the calibration.

If you want instructions for calibrating the Virtuoso click here.

My Virtuoso did not come with the brush that was mentioned in the opertion manual. How do I get a brush?

We are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Our first 130 grinders were packed without their brush. Please send us an email to support@baratza.com.  we will promptly send you your brush.

When I plug my Virtuoso on it runs constantly? What is wrong and how do I solve the problem?

The problem is a very slight mis-adjustment between the rubber pulse button and the micro switch behind it. The solution is to remove the grounds bin and press UP on the plastic panel that forms the “roof” of the grounds bin recess (just behind and below the pulse button). Lift up on this plastic panel about ¼ inch, then release. Test the fix by listening closely for a faint “click” when the pulse button is pushed (note: the pulse button works best if you push on the lower half of the button).  We have designed a fix that will be used in all grinders built in the future.  Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you.  Feel free to call 1-877-701-2021 or e-mail support@baratza.com if you continue to have a problem.

If my rubber pulse button colllapes into the grinder, what can I do?

When pushed on the top the rubber pulse button can collapes into the grinder.  If you are a little handy, you can pop the grinder apart and replace the button.  If you have questions or would rather we solve this problem e-mail us at support@baratza.com or call at 877-701-2021.
